Phimai sand stone temples were buit in 11th – 12th centuries before Angkor Wat around 100 years, it also was the orginal town of one of Khmer (Combodia) royal family that had reigned the Angkor Wat in later. Its name is from Vimayapura that means city of Vimaya (the name of respected figure or religious place) with developed into the Thai name ‘Phimai’. Phimai temples were built to give respect to their ancestors with Buddhist style which is different from other Khmer historical places in Thailand, therefore it is the great of sand stone monument.
It consists of 3 parts. The inside part is a yard rounding with terraces and major white sand stone pagoda at the middle. The middle pagoda has Ramayana and Krisana (Gods from Indian epics) together with Buddhist carvings. The middle part is a yard rounding with walls. This yard has 2 buildings headed to the west and 4 pools at each of corner. The outside part has pathway to the temples decorated with Naga bridge and Singha sculptures (Naga and Singha are the creatures from the myth of Hindu)

Getting There :Phimai temples are located in Phiamai town, Nakorn Ratchasima province at the Northeast of Thailand. It is far from Nakorn Ratchasima 60 kilometers (37.2 miles) and from Bangkok 259 kilometers (161 miles).
There is bus service from Nakorn Ratchasima to Phimai town every half-hour. It also has hotels and guesthouses that are available to travelers. |
