The kingdom of Thailand lies in the center of Southeast Asia. It’s divided into 5 natural regions : North : comprise of the continuous mountains and forests. Central : the vast rice fields and rivers with mountains of the Central plains. Northeast or Isaan : the semi-arid farm lands of the Northeast plateau; East : the tropical lands comprised of orchard, beaches and islands South : the tropical beaches and islands with long coastline of the South peninsula. Thailand is distinct geographic regions. The north of the country is mountainous, with the highest point at 2,565 meters above sea level (8,415 ft). The northeast or Isaan is consist of a large plateau, bordered to the east by the Mekong river. The center of the country is dominated by the flat Chao Phraya river valley which runs into the Gulf of Thailand. The East is and The south consists of narrow isthmus that widens into the Malay peninsula. The Chao Phraya and the Mekong rivers are the main resource of rural Thailand. The Gulf of Thailand contributes to the tourism sector owing to its clear shallow waters along the coasts in the Southern region. The Andaman Sea is regarded as Thailand's most precious natural resource as it hosts the most popular and luxurious resorts in Asia. Phuket, Krabi, Ranong, Phang Nga, Trang and their lush islands all lay along the coasts of the Andaman sea and despite the 2004 Tsunami, they continue to be and ever more so, the playground of the rich and elite of Asia and the world. The country comprises 77 provinces that are further divided into districts, sub-districts and villages. Bangkok is the capital city and center of political, commercial, industrial and cultural activities. It is also the resident of Thailand's Royal Family, with His Majesty the King recognized as Head of State. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, or King Rama IX, the ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty, the present king. The King has reigned for more than half a century, making him the longest reigning Thai monarch. Thailand embraces a rich diversity of cultures and traditions. With its proud history, tropical climate and renowned hospitality, the Kingdom is a never-ending source of fascination and pleasure for all visitors. |
