Colorful and various decorated beautiful styles of krathongs – floating lotus-shaped containers made from bannana leaves and trunk or other materials - appear in everywhere. With smiling on the faces, people puts krathongs on the water in canals, lakes, rivers and sea. Krathong is the symbol of this celebration which is the most important Thailand full moon ceremony. The great and original celebration is Sukhothai Loi Krathongs & Candle Festival.
Sukhothai is the first capital of Thailand kingdom(13-15 centureis). It has proporous commercials and arts. The art and cultural heritages of Sukhothai period still remain in present Thai life. Loi Krathong & Candle Festival is originated from Nang Noppamas – Queen of Sukhothai King, she made krathong as lotus-shaped and the king floated it along the river. Since then, on the full moon night in 12th month of Thai lunar calendar(October-November), people floats krathongs – like lotus-shaped- to pay respect and apologize to Goddess of Water. This ceremony also flies away misfortune from them. |
Sunshine Scene :Sukhothai Loi Krathong & Candle Festival is held at Historical Park – the Sukhothai ancient city – which located outside the new city at the west 12 kilometers. They celebrate the festival from the morning with palm offfering to monk ceremony, many celebration activities on the day and Loi Krathong ceremony in the night. The highlight scene is krathong floating on the river among streams of candle light from myriad krathongs while the moon light is shining on the river.

Getting There :
Sukhothai is in the lower North of Thailand. It is far from Bangkok 427 kilometers (265 miles). There is a daily flight and direct air conditioned bus from Bangkok to Sukhothai. The bus service takes time 6-7 hours. Most of acommodation is in new Sukhothai city and is the budget level expept fews which located around Historical Park. |
