Thousands of prisoners died as a result of brutal treatment by their captors, therefore it is called “Death Railway” The railway was built during 1942 – 1943 and its strategic objective was to link 415 kilometers (257 miles) of rugged terrain between Thailand and Myanmar in order to secure an alternative supply route for the Japanese conquest India.
